Once rumoured to be the place of Henry VI’s romantic romps and liaisons, Charles-Henry de Valbray and his wife, the irrepressibly bubbly Ségolène, have lovingly restored Château Saint-Paterne. Staying here is like being in a large family home, complete with worn faded carpets, original exposed beams and creaking wooden floorboards. It is welcoming and comforting, quaintly old fashioned, supremely enchanting and yet a stay here comes with all the modern bits and pieces that you might need.
During winter, fires crackle in the open fireplace in the drawing room, in summer splash in the huge heated pool or explore the emerald green gardens and little wooded copses. After an apéritif, dine by candlelight and feast on a dinner prepared by the brilliant self-taught Charles-Henry using fresh vegetables and herbs from the kitchen garden.
Fantastically child friendly, baby monitors can be provided to parents, the gardens are home to a trampoline, badminton, croquet, ping-pong and plenty of space. And with the delights of Normandy to explore with its idyllic villages, beaches and rolling hills, a stay here may not be long enough…
and loved it?
